International Literacy Day
8th Sep 2023
Today is International Literacy Day!
"Literacy" is simply the ability to read and write. Reading is both an important activity for child development, and an enjoyable hobby!
However, not every child enjoys sitting down to listen, look at or read books. There are lots of fun ways to promote literacy at home. Here are some ideas:
✻ Read books with your child:
- Let your child hold the book and turn the pages
✻ Model reading behaviour:
- Set aside time to read
- Reduce distractions (e.g. turn off the TV/phone)
✻ Teach children rhymes and songs
✻ Encourage all forms of reading:
- Comic books
- Novels
- Audiobooks
- Picture books
- Novels
-And more
✻ Practise storytelling:
- Real stories about their lives
- Imaginative stories
✻ Point out print; e.g.:
- Text messages
- Recipes
- Signs etc.
Remember:
"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child."- Dr. Seuss
