National Tree Day: 5 DEIREADH FÓMHAIR 2023
We celebrated National Tree Day by planting a hazel tree on our school grounds. We also gathered some apples from our apple trees. Autumn is the perfect season to head outdoors to learn and explore. Some children fed our fruit waste to the worms in our wormery while others did some litter picking with our brand new pickers!
Did you know... The theme for National Tree Day this year was: ‘Nuts about Nature’ – ‘Fiáin chun Dúlra’, and what better tree to champion the theme than the Hazel tree – also known as Corylus avellana or Crann Coll. The Hazel tree has been an important source of food and medicine in Ireland for centuries and was of noted importance in our customs and folklore, from The Salmon of Knowledge, to using its branches to divine for water.
